Back in the 1980s, when I first learned to meditate, I never imagined the far-ranging impact that mindfulness and meditation would have on my life. Nor did I imagine these practices, which felt so radical I often felt compelled to keep them secret, would one day become mainstream.
Back then, I was studying at a yoga school in Jerusalem, Israel. Through my teachers there I was introduced to Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, the primary teacher in the Siddha Yoga tradition.
In 1989 I decided it was time to move back to my home in California and saw the transition period as the perfect opportunity to visit Gurumayi and spend three weeks on her ashram, meditating and learning.
Then, once back in California, I discovered Insight Meditation and Spirit Rock Meditation Center and continued to pursue my understanding and practice of mindfulness and meditation under the guidance of the many teachers in this tradition.
During that time, I also pursued advanced degrees in education and began teaching college students at a range of institutions, from urban community colleges to elite institutions such as Harvard, where I earned my doctorate. When life circumstances changed and I needed to take a break from formal teaching, I began working as a life coach.
Through all these changes, I have brought my understanding of the value of mindfulness--the ability to be fully present in each and every moment of our lives--to my teaching and coaching.
I continue to deepen my understanding of the practice of mindfulness by attending trainings and retreats and have completed the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction practicum with the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
The growing body of research indicating the numerous gifts of mindfulness have me more excited than ever to share these practices, and all that I have learned from my ongoing journey.
What others say about Elana...
I contacted Elana for help with removing blocks from my life. Elana's coaching gave me insight and hope. After working with her, I experienced less negativity in my life and much more hope and "positivity." Elana is especially skilled at intuitively guiding her clients to the next step, the next block to be uncovered and released. I feel blessed and humbly grateful about having had the opportunity to work with Elana.
I recently participated in one of Elana Peled's workshops. I thoroughly enjoyed her presentation and found the experience to be interesting and uplifting. She took a complex topic and explained it in a relevant and meaningful way. I found that the work we did was therapeutic and healing and I would recommend her to anyone without hesitation.
Elana's encouragement sustained and empowered me throughout graduate school, enabling me to navigate through the labyrinth of doctoral studies. Elana's greatest strengths include her authenticity, her strong understanding of exemplary writing and research, and her attentiveness, which enables her to provide individualized and reflective feedback.
